We’re losing numbers.
Seven went out to look for Nine and hasn’t been back.
Twenty-Six pushed Twenty-Five into a lake, so he’s dead.
And all that’s left of the 170’s is the three.
I don’t understand why this keeps happening.
When I was young, there were few enough to keep track of.
But now they’re dropping like flies and I can only save the ones on the radio.
I guess no one cares because they never got to know the numbers like I did.
Like how Three is always unsure, and Zero likes public speaking.
I’m sure they all think One is the best because she is the first after Nothing –but she isn’t.
Five was always my favourite because he looked out for Three and wore a big blue coat.
I wish the people would see the love Nine has for Eight.
Maybe then they would understand why Nine had to go look for her,
Or even why Eight left in the first place.
Maybe if they took a look at Four’s life,
They would understand why I hate Thirteen so much.
I think the divorce has been bothering Eleven.
Sixty-Six doesn’t like all this attention,
And I still don’t understand why everyone hates my numbers.
This is fantastic. Resisting the urge to do a Miley face emoji.

It was fun, though I’d consider lopping off the first and last lines. The titleā”Numbers”ā I think does enough, and I feel those lines make it a tad too nail on. It’s the whole personification of the inherently impersonal that you’ve got going here that works so well in the text.

I’m math phobic, but I love 3. He is my favorite number – odd in his own way and still so easy to contend with. I wonder what someone with synesthesia would see when reading your poem? Something colorful and lovely, for sure.
