Forever Mahogany

While he was staring at the gray wall, his mother took an opportunity to ask the doctor man which statistic her son would be this week. He laughs, but only on the inside. The voices hadn’t returned for almost a month, so the boy was expecting a good report. He heard his mother sob near the gray filing cabinet but he didn’t care enough to turn around. The doctor tried to hold his mother’s hand, and the boy sat in the doctor chair and spun. He spun faster and faster until the voices returned and he stopped to see his mother refuse a hug from the doctor man. On the way out the doctor man tried to stop the elevator, and the boy tried to stop the voices. The boy’s mother picked out a mahogany box that day. “It will be yours” she told him. The voices said, it would be his mother’s.
